The tourist tax is much more than just an additional cost. The proceeds collected are invested in initiatives that enhance the quality of the tourist experience and, at the same time, value the cultural and environmental heritage of the area. These resources are used to restore monuments, fund events, improve public transportation, and ensure a cleaner and more welcoming urban environment.

In other words, when a tourist pays the tourist tax, they directly contribute to the well-being of the city hosting them, leaving a positive impact even after their departure.

    What changes in 2025?

The year 2025 will bring significant changes for the tourist tax, especially in Milan, where the arrival of the Jubilee 2025 will bring an extraordinary influx of visitors. To prepare for this occasion, the municipality has decided to update the rates, introducing increases that will finance crucial services for tourist hospitality and urban decorum.

Milan: Updated Rates for a Better Experience

The new rates, valid from January 1 to December 31, 2025, will apply to all accommodations. For example:

    • One-star hotels will see the tourist tax increase from €2.50 to €3.50 per night per person.
    • Two-star hotels will experience an increase in the tourist tax from €3.50 to €4.90.
    • For three-star hotels, the increase will be more significant, rising from €4.50 to €6.30.
    • For four and five-star hotels, the tourist tax will rise from €5.00 to €7.00.
    • Vacation homes and short-term rentals will also be affected, with a new rate increasing from €4.50 to €6.30 per night.

These increases are not random: they aim to support initiatives such as the maintenance of public spaces, security, and the promotion of local tourism. During a period like the Jubilee, when millions of people will visit Italy, ensuring quality services is a priority.

National News: Uniformity and New Opportunities

On a national level, 2025 will mark a step forward in the management of the tourist tax. All Italian municipalities, even the smallest ones, will be able to adopt this tax, with uniform rules that will ensure greater consistency. This change aims to make the system more transparent and to offer economic support even to less frequented locations, but rich in tourist potential.

How Does the Bureaucratic Procedure Work?

Managing the tourist tax may seem like a simple operation, but in practice, it involves several phases and regulations to comply with. Accommodation managers must calculate the tax for each overnight stay, collect the amount from their guests, and promptly pay it to the competent municipality. Additionally, they must prepare detailed reports and ensure everything is in line with local laws.

However, this process can become complicated, especially for those managing multiple properties or those with little time to dedicate to bureaucracy.
